The New Era In Movie Rentals

The New Era In Movie Rentals

I recall many years ago when people were saying that movies were a thing of the past, that people would be entertained with the internet and video games. Well, not so! In fact, the movie business (including movie rental) is big business and it’s not likely to go away anytime soon.

Let’s take a look at the two "500 pound guerillas" in the movie rental business: Netflix and Blockbuster. We have a brief description of the programs outlined here:

Netflix launched its online movie rental service in 1999 and currently has more than 3,000,000 customers.

With Netflix you can rent as many movies from the comfort of your home and have them delivered to your door in about 1 business day via U.S. Mail. There are no late fees and no due dates, and shipping is free both ways. Plans range from $9.99-$17.99 plus any applicable tax. When you finish watching a movie, simply put it in its prepaid envelope and mail it back to them. After they receive it, they’ll send you another movie.

They has a wide selection of movies – everything from classics to new releases, with 40,000 titles. Their web site is available 24 hours a day and makes finding movies simple and convenient. New customers can try it free for two weeks. You can cancel your membership anytime with no cancellation fees.

netflix rokuBlockbuster now has a very similar online mail delivery movie rental program. Their program started in March 2005 and they have a online movie library with more than 30,000 titles. Their monthly fee is $14.99 (plus applicable taxes) for an unlimited number of movies. You can have up to three out at one time. Return them in the postage-paid envelope and you’ll receive others that you have selected. Also as a member, each month Blockbuster give you two ecoupons for free in-store movie or game rentals. You can cancel at anytime. They also have a free trial membership.

The up-side of these online, mail delivery rental programs is there are no due dates or late fees, you don’t have to go into the store and there are more available selections than the stores carry. The downside is that you have to wait for delivery in the mail.

Visit them online and make your choice. In fact, why not try the free trial on both of them. Then you can make an intelligent choice. And choice is a good thing.

How Should You Rent A Movie?

Renting a movie used to be simple. You drive to the rental shop, pick out a movie, pay the rental fee, take it home, watch it, and bring it back. Now it is not so simple. But that’s not a bad thing! It’s more complicated but that’s because there are more choices and better offers. Find out how you can win big from the new choices available.

You can still rent the old-fashioned way. Blockbuster still has stores everywhere that you can go to and pick up the latest flicks. If you rent a movie about 3 times a year, this is probably the best way for you. If you still love blockbuster but are moving on, move on with them. They now offer a very flexible mail service. You can sign up with a monthly fee. They will mail you the movies you want. With some plans, you can even exchange them for movies in-store, or you can drop them off to get new ones in the mail faster.

Netflix is also a movie by mail service. You can sign up and receive up to four movies at a time. You keep a list on their website and they will send you those at the top of the list. Once you are finished, you just mail them back and they will send the next ones. This is a good alternative to Blockbuster if you want more movies at a time. You can get a maximum of 4 movies at a time with Neflix but only 3 at a time with blockbuster.

netflix canadaIf you aren’t interested in movies by mail but want them faster, you can rent them by downloading. Services such as Cinema Now and Amazon’s Unbox service allow you to download movies and watch them as often as you want within a certain time frame. It is cheaper than downloading the movie to keep, but it’s faster then renting from a store or through the mail. You can watch them on your computer, or if you can connect your computer to your television screen you can watch it on there. Downloading is the fastest way because it is instant, although you can’t keep it for as long as you want.

There are ups and downs to each type of service. Though one down for one person might not be a big deal to someone else. For example, someone might see downloading as not worth it because they can only watch it on their computer while someone who can connect their computer to the screen doesn’t see it as a big deal. Also, someone might find it a hassle to have to send back movies through the mail and wait while someone else who doesn’t watch movies that often would rather wait and have some time in between anyway.

How should you rent a movie? It all depends on your preferences. Choose the service that is right for you. You can even give each a try and see which you like best. For more information about these services or if you want to sign up now, check out the link in the author bio below.
